Boston Celtics vs Golden State Warriors

The Boston Celtics face the toughest test of their young season on Thursday, taking on the Golden State Warriors at the TD Garden. The game starts at 8 p.m. on TNT.

Perhaps Thursday’s most interesting subplot will be how the Celtics — sans Gordon Hayward, but with several intriguing young players — match up with a Warriors squad many consider to be one of the greatest NBA teams of all time. The Warriors are the prohibitive favorites this season, despite a strengthened Western Conference.

The Celtics, however, are pretty undeniably on the rise. Warriors coach Steve Kerr says Boston looks like the “team of the future in the East,” and given the talent both developing and currently in place, it’s difficult to disagree. The Celtics have won 13 consecutive games, and the third- and fourth-highest scorers on the team (Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown) are 19- and 21-years-old respectively.

Celtics: Al Horford, Aron Baynes (Marcus Morris).

Warriors: Draymond Green, Zaza Pachulia.

Advantage: Warriors.

The Celtics are better positioned here than in previous years. Horford is playing at an absurdly high level, anchoring the best defense in the league and generating (entirely too early) buzz for Defensive Player of the Year. Baynes is a banger (Baynger?). Morris is very versatile.

But the Warriors have Draymond Green, the defending Defensive Player of the Year and one of the most versatile players in the league. Green can defend positions one through five, and he is the glue holding together a team that won two championships in three years.

Horford has been phenomenal and if he keeps up his current two-way play all season, this is a real conversation. For now, though, Green is at worst one of the 15-best players in the league and the Warriors get the nod.
